Examining the psychology of practitioners, institutions and structures:

چکیده

‘Medically unexplained symptoms’ (MUS), through the lens of biopsychosocial model, are understood in mainstream psy disciplines and related literature as a primarily psychosocial phenomenon perpetuated by ‘dysfunctional’ psychology on part people labelled with such. Biopsychosocial discourse practice this field, underpinned little empirical foundation lacking theoretical coherency, associated harms sustained MUS. Yet, attention is paid to social actors institutions whose policy derives from theorising, or vested interests (re)produce such theorising. This article contends that lack reflexivity among practitioners other individual, institutional structural levels furthers hegemony contributes harms. Non-reflexive behaviour within clinical ‘therapeutic’ encounters broader power structures examined, possible psychological underpinnings non-reflexivity explored. Notably, concept gain, drawn dominant around MUS, applied broadly explore what might be gained eschewing adhering narratives. Implications for practice, supervision, training research discussed, notably highlighting need critical all domains.
